VEGGIE OPTIONS: WOODLANDS IN NASHVILLE

January 10, 2009 @ 11:22 PM - Mike O

I somehow find myself in Nashville a few times a year for work, and this week was another one of those instances.  In the past, I’ve always ended up a bit south of Nashville, more in the Franklin area; but this time I ended up working at a customer site not too far from downtown, and was able to stay right next to Vanderbilt University.  Now, if it wasn’t winter and had I had the time (it was a case of fly there, work my arse of three days straight, fly home) my bike would have came with me, fortunately though I found quite the gem in this southern music city:  Woodlands Indian Vegetarian Restaurant.

I have absolutely loved Indian food for a long time, even before I was a vegetarian and it was one of the first type’s of restaurants I liked to go to when I first started to transition into a non-meated diet, but my big knock on Indian vegetarian options is that they are typically filled with dairy....they are big into using cream, butter, eggs, cottage cheese and yogurt, and while I admit that I’m not 100% vegan, I do try my best to stick to a vegan diet.  What is great about Woodlands is that they are very accomodating to vegans.  I asked them about what options were vegan, and they immediately told me that anything on the menu the chef will make vegan for me.  Wow, that solves my problem, eh?

I ended up getting chana masala and vegetable samosa’s when I was there, and the food was awesome.  They have a very extensive menu, and if you like Indian food, they have everything you could possibly imagine.  I only wish I was able to go there more than once during my trip so I could have tried some different things, but due to the lack of time I wasn’t able to.  Maybe on my next trip?  We shall see.

This place has immediately gone onto one of my all time favorite veggie restaurants.  It doesn’t look like they have been open for too long, maybe a year or so?  It sounds like they are doing well for themselves, so I hope to go there again in my future travels.

They are located on West End Ave right off of I-440.  Check happycow.net for further info.....
