WHAT’S ON YOUR TOILET?
January 01, 2009 @ 3:43 PM - Mike O
This is going to be one of those posts where 99% of the people reading this will wonder “Why is he posting this?” The other one percent may think something along the lines of “I accumulate a ton of magazine’s on my toilet, too!” Either way, enjoy.
So, I read a lot in the bathroom. I’m not sure why, I think it’s just something guys do; and it also gives me something to do while I’m using the bathroom. I’ve always been into reading magazines (no wonder I’m a contributor to one....), and I spend a ton of time at Barnes & Noble reading about anything from cars to bikes to vegetarian food to music/politics/world events/travel......anything under the sun. I guess thats what makes magazines so cool is that there is probably one for any interest you may have.
Anyways, I normally clean out the bathroom as magazines begin to stack up, and for some reason they got piled up pretty well over the past month or so. I figured why not take a picture and give a list of the magazines I’ve been reading recently?
Natioinal Geographic - November 2008 - This issue discusses light pollution and its effect on the environment. The cover is of Chicago at night. Any of you who may have flown out of O’Hare at night going east will probably spot that city skyline pretty easily.
DasAuto - Winter 08/09 - Since I own a VW, they send me this quarterly magazine. Mostly it’s just to promote their upcoming models and new VW apparel you can get. It’s fun for us VW nuts.
The New Yorker - Nov. 3, 08 - This is the cartoon issue. It was an awesome issue....
National Geographic - January 2009 - The Gold issue. Talks about the gold trade and what it is doing to the world (particularly 3rd world countries in Africa, the gold rush there is similar to the diamond mining of a few decades ago). Also features pics from behind the scenes at the White House which are pretty cool…
The New Yorker - January 5, 2008 - My first issue from the subscription Heather’s mom got me for Christmas, thanks Mrs. Michaluk!
Ride UK - Issue 123 - Still reading the new issue. Always enjoyable....
RideBMX - Jan/Feb 09 - I got this particularly because I really liked Jeff Z’s medium format (I think) B&W’s in the Eddie Cleveland interview.
Bavarian autosport - Fall 2008 - It’s a catalog for BMW parts and accessories. I don’t own a BMW, but I’ve been getting this catalog since I was 14 years old because I’ve had a long obsession with BMW’s (particularly M3’s). Are you starting to see the tendency of my love of German auto’s?
Dig - issue 66 - What an awesome cover Ricky shot, eh? Lots of roadtripping in this issue. Lots of fun stuff to read and amazing pics!
Dig - Issue 67 - I’m still reading through this issue, and so far I really enjoy the Jamie Bestwick interview, as I think there is a lot to admire in that fellow. I also liked that Andy Ziess got profiled, as he’s been one of those guys in the BMX world a lot of people probably don’t know about (unless you’re in the industry) but he contributes a lot to BMX and is a really nice guy.
National Geographic - September 2008 - This issue had a real cool story on elephants (the photos are pretty surreal), also talks about the origins of food and what we will need to do, hunger wise, to sustain our population growth over the next few decades.
Everywhere Magazine - Issue 4 - This magazine was a spinoff of JPG Magazine, and issue 4 was the last issue as they put it on hiatus. I was bummed. This magazine is similar to JPG as all the photos are submitted from members of Everywhere, and each issue they would choose a few themes and choose the best pictures to publish. It features photos of people traveling the world, and I loved it, so I was pretty upset when they announced they weren’t going to continue. I think that a ton of people in BMX would have loved this mag (given the travel addiction most of us have). It also featured articles members submitted (anything from best airplane food, to the in’s and out’s of travel insurance among other travel tips).
A complete guide to rabbits - Heather and I got this book when we got our first rabbits VW and Lola. It has a lot of good info on bunnies, and is good to reference from time to time.
JPG - Issue 19 - Just like Everywhere magazine, except its focus is the actual photography. All photos are user submitted, and they choose a few themes and publish the best submissions. This issue featured portraits of faith and night photography.
RideUK - Issue 121 - Had the Anthem 2 UK trip, Poland trip, Fly UK trip. It’s BMX, it’s fun!
National Geographic - December 2008 - Architecture from King Herod, photos from Mars!
JPG - Issue 18 - On stage, an American girl in Lebanon, Democracy and Geometry.
RideUK - Issue 120 - I didn’t dig the cover too much, but it had a lot of good stuff. I especially liked the Eli Platt interview. I didn’t know much about him, but he sounds like a real cool guy, into philosophy, vegan, a good attitude towards life and an amazing rider (lofty manual to over ice?).
RideUK - Issue 114 - The photo issue. I enjoy photo issues from all the BMX magazines (pretty self explanatory), I recently dug this one up to look through, lots of good photos, but how about Manu Sanz’ photos? How original is that for BMX photography?
Thats it!
