Introducing Devin Feil. Devin is one heck of a videographer/BMXer from the Massachusetts area in the US. You might recognize his name as the responsible party behind Pegleg Clothing, along with last year’s infamous Pegleg DVD. In case you never got around to watching the Pegleg DVD, kick yourself now. It’s a beautifully produced video, with attention to every detail, superb editing and ridiculous riding. Knowing Devin’s got the touch, we asked him to produce regular DigBMX.com videos featuring the Pegleg team and more. But first, we figured we’d give you an inside glimpse into Devin’s history as a videographer. This is Devin Feil; Pegleg owner, freecoaster master and all around nice guy…
NAME: Devin Feil
Age: 22
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SHOOTING VIDEOS?
I have been bringing a video camera out almost as long as I have been riding. I still have some clips on my parent’s computer dating back to 2000.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MAKING PEGLEG VIDEOS?
Four years ago this month was when we put the first edit up.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE TO FILM/EDIT?
I have had a GL2 for about five or so years, and the crew has contributed mostly from VX1000’s, VX2000’s, and GL2’s. I am planning on picking up a DVX 100B soon, footage coming out of those cameras looks great. I have Final Cut Pro on my Mac that I got when I headed off to college four years ago.
HOW DO YOU DECIDE ON MUSIC CHOICES?
A lot of the time I go to my older brother for suggestions. He makes music himself, skates and watches all the BMX videos I buy. Usually he has seen the footage I am working with and comes up with a few songs out of his collection to listen to.
WHICH OTHER BMX FILM MAKERS DO YOU RESPECT OR DRAW INSPIRATION FROM?
I respect anyone putting quality full length videos out. To name names, Navaz, Joe Cox and Chad Shackelford have all put out some great stuff in the last couple years. I wish Dave Parrick was still around BMX though.
WHAT IS THE BEST SECTION YOU’VE EVER MADE?
If I had to pick one, I would say Jeff Martin’s section out of our DVD. With Jeff I was able to film, or be there to setup the shot for everything in his part, a lot of great trips and weekends spent at either my house or his working towards that part.
WHAT IS THE WORST THING YOU’VE EVER MADE?
This one spring break I had from my freshman year of college we tried to go south to Virginia and beyond. My van wasn’t letting that happen and the transmission went just outside of Baltimore. We ended up staying at this girl’s dorm room Alex knew for the whole week, and got food poisoning too while we were at it and ruined the girl’s bathroom early one morning. We tried to ride some street, but it was freezing in that area and we posted up an edit of what we could salvage from that disaster of a week. On the plus side, I met one of my good friends Travis Splain on the trip, who later become a member of the crew.
WHO’S YOUR FAVOURITE RIDER TO FILM?
I really can’t decide on that one, filming with any of the crew is always a real good time.
WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO GO FILM?
Seth Kimbrough, if I was given the chance to put a video part together with anyone I think it would be him. Loved watching Seth ride ever since his Props bio from back when he was like 17. There are others who I would love to work with but he stands out as an amazing rider and has always come across in interviews as a good dude.
WHAT ARE THREE THINGS THAT YOU LOVE ABOUT MAKING VIDEOS?
1. Seeing firsthand people really pushing themselves to do things they aren’t sure they can do. I end up feeling almost as happy as them when I see them stomp down whatever they are trying.
2. All the places filming street takes you, and the fun shit that happens along the way.
3. Satisfaction of seeing a completed section myself (the editor) and the rider are proud of.
AND THREE THINGS YOU HATE ABOUT MAKING VIDEOS?
1. Seeing bad falls, it’s the worst to see a good friend hurt himself and potentially take riding out of his life for a while.
2. Usual hassles, security, cops, citizens who think they are heroes by trying to stop you from riding, and bad weather.
3. When you are really looking forward to filming at a spot only to find out it’s gone or capped when you pull up.
WHAT ARE THREE OF YOUR FAVOURITE BMX DVDS?
1. Can I Eat
2. Voices
3. Left/Right
NAME THREE OF YOUR FAVOURITE VHS BMX VIDS
1. Animal
2. Standard Domination
3. Toss up between Nowhere Fast and Neighborhood Superheroes. I watched all of those videos so damn much when I got them.
WHAT ARE THREE OF YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE BMX PRODUCTIONS?
I will just say that companies who put out videos where it was clear the riding was not the best the riders could come up with are part of why kids were so inclined to rip videos online. I know a number of times I spent my money down at the shop on something I really looked forward to that was a letdown.
CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW THIS MONTH’S DIG/PEGLEG VIDEO CAME TOGETHER?
Shot from Spring 2006 through Summer 2007. It’s a collection of footage I really wanted to put out to the world to see, but I wanted to save the original edit for those who picked up the DVD. The main differences are the song and some of the clip order. The song is a classic my brother suggested and I was instantly psyched to work with, and the clip order changed according to how I felt it worked best with the song.
DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT NEXT MONTH’S DIG/PEGLEG VIDEO MIGHT BE?
Yeah I have already started on it a bit, it’s going to be footage from as many of the members of the team that can get clips. Right now Jeff Martin is out with a broken foot he is about to get surgery on, and Jeff Evans is recovering from a fall that put him in the hospital for a few days. All those who are healthy are going to be in there.
