Elliot Van Orman is one dedicated bmxer. Over the years we have seen his brothers Ted and Beeler rise the ranks with their unique trail and street styles with Elliot behind the scenes filming, editing, and making moves himself on his twenty inch. “Time Will Tell” is not a new Skapegoat, its not the next Can I Eat? But what Elliot has accomplished is capturing scenes not only of his native land of the Midwest, but of the vast American Bmx scene at its heart and soul. Mostly in woods, and on concrete but also in the Nature catagory. Mixed thru Time Will Tell are beautiful timelapse and scenic shots of city skylines, waterfalls, wastelands, protesters, the homeless problem we all seem to ignore, pretty much everything the U.S.A has to offer in the form of beauty, and wonder. Including the beauty that is a perfect tabletop shot over a massive double by Ted Van Orman (sick guy).
With sweet spots, great riding, good filming, awesome trails, and riders you normally won’t see on the web or in magazines, pick up a copy of Time Will Tell from your local bmx shop. Grab some brews, order a pizza, set up a session in a tad over an hour and let your eyes get your brain stoked on the fact that your going to be going out and enjoying your bicycle just as these lads have been doing. Some of us are still riding the Anthem II train and thats all well and good. But remember, there are other videos out there done low key and being released on DVD helping to keep the underground scene alive and well. So even if your thinking fuck me, its just BMX what does bike riding have to do with waterfalls? Quit being a chode, leave your prefab skatepark and remember that BMX is about adventure. For some of us its the best part about riding, not filming some smith to feeble to hardway line that you saw online two hours ago so you filmed it on your IPhone to gain the bragging rights to your homies. Go have fun, ride bikes, and realize that as epic as it maybe…Time Will Tell is a solid BMX video that your either going to fall in love with, or watch just a section or two. Either way I doubt you can complain with the caliber of riding. Good job Elliot! -Adam Schnellenbach
1. What made you decide to go the DVD route instead of the ever so popular web video format?
Having a DVD in your hands and being able to watch it on a television set is so much more rewarding than watching a youtube clip. Though I actually enjoy Vimeo alot for its web quality. I drink coffee often while watching Vimeo stuff. haha. I like it.
2. Has school been a motivating factor in getting this release done, or created more ball ups with time and what not?
No I graduated from Columbia College in Chicago with a film degree back in 2008. Ever since then I’ve worked on smaller video projects while trying to finish up Time Will Tell. Now that I have this movie released, I’m really getting the ball rolling with my own video business… Elliot Van Orman Productions.. I plan to have that keep me busy for many days ahead.
3. Im sure the world is waiting for more Steve Hamilton clips, what can the hordes of Hamilton fans expect from the man, the myth, the beard in your latest production?
Haha, I have shots of Steven before he lost it. So his fans can expect some decent riding clips of him, not as many as I would have liked to have gotten in the video, but he’s still in it, killing it. Steven’s a good guy, I talk to him on Facebook everyday.
4. It seems as if your brother Ted and Beeler have been keeping it low key lately when it comes to coverage after Standpoint 6. These two seem to have a natural and amazing talent both on the streets and in the woods. Has real life gotten in the way, injures, or just riding for the fun of riding without the camera?
I’m sure alot of people are very excited to see new footage of your brothers in 2011, rightfully so. Ted does some of the best tables ever! There’s alot of great footage of my brothers in the DVD. Though Ted had a real bad knee injury a few years back, but he’s doing better since then, and he lives in Denver, CO right now. Beeler lives out in Seattle, WA and both of them are still riding better than ever.
5. Where was most of “Time Will Tell” filmed?
It was filmed all over, alot in Michigan and The Midwest, alot in Seattle and The Northwest. Vancouver, Austin, TX, Europe, Taiwan, New Zeland and So On… alot of different locations and traveling are in the movie. A lot of bang for your buck.
6. Craziest moment while filming, on the bike or just a random incident with a midwest tweaker probably high on crystal meth?
Ha ha. To tell you the truth, all of the filming (2004-2009) was crazy.. you’ll just have to watch the movie and see. haha.
7. Trails, Rails, or Bails?
Trails are good.
8. Was finding fitting music for this project a pain, or did you have a clear idea in your head on what you wanted the majority of BMXer’s want to hear in a DVD production now days… aside from Gucci Mane?
I just picked songs that I felt would tell the story I was trying to convey best. I’m pretty happy with the music selection and I think most people will enjoy it as well.
9. Any skits for us viewers to expect, or any non riding clips to bring a smile to folks faces to help break apart the riding and bring the humor?
There’s lots in the main video and the bonus DVD (the 2nd disc) entitled The Other Times which is a bonus comedy movie filmed throughout my college years in Chicago (2004-2008).. which has lots of good times in it as well.
10. Without giving too much away who do you think went the hardest during the course of filming?
Everyone did great, I was real happy to get to film Jason Teet and Jordan Hango in Vancouver the last year of filming.. Those guys killed it!
11. For the production geeks out there what cameras were used and editing programs?
I shot it on a few Sony DCR-VX2100′s and edited the movie on Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 and authored it on Adobe Encore… but since I released it I have upgraded to Full HD with the Panasonic HD AG-HPX170 and a New Mac Editing set up with Final Cut Pro Studio 7.0. I’m real happy with the new set up and with it I plan to take on shorter web based videos and projects from now on… TWT has over 2 hours of content with the bonus disc and that’s alot of the reason why it took so long to finish.
12. Why a double disc release, I know VHS would be too costly!
I did a double disc, because there were 2 movies I released and I couldn’t fit them all onto one disc.
13. Elliot do you have a section in this video or just some clips? I loved the Desaparecidos track in The Day is Over.
I have some clips in it, but there are no rider parts in the DVD, instead there are sections all based around a theme/song and they all tell the story of the movie as it plays on.
14. Are the trails still running at your folks house in the Detroit burbs?
No RIP. (1996-2009). My brother Ted moved away to Denver, CO and no one was around to take care of them, so the time came and with a bulldozer and six hours of work, the backyard was taken down in July of 2009. It was a sad day and now it’s just flat ground. Time is Crazy, RIP.
15. My first glimpse at the Michigan Scene was in the same Props as the Garret Byrnes interview aside from Flip, who from that era is still tearing it up?
My brothers are still riding good since then, but I’m not sure with everyone else because it’s been a while .. time is crazy.
16. Midwest, Eastcoast, or the Westcoast when it comes to filming and producing hammersaw footage?
I enjoyed filming trails in the Northwest and filming stuff when I lived in Chicago. Those were some fun days.
17. Are fence gaps in the Van Ormen bloodline?
Plenty in the DVD, watch and see.
18. Any major injuries while filming?
A few, my brother Ted had a serious knee injury, and some others got hurt pretty bad as well, but to tell you the truth it was a long period of filming, so alot happened and it’s hard to keep track of it all.
19. Favorite clip filmed without giving too much away?
My favorite clip filmed??? Oh man hahaha, it’s hard to pick one because there’s too many. I enjoyed them all and I hope others do, too.
20. Does Life? Zine have anything to do with the release of Time Will Tell?
Yeah Ted and LIFE? BMX is helping me distribute/sell the DVD and get it out there.
