DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL BIKE SETUP: Over the past few years my front end has been raised a good amount and the bars width has been extended some as well. I like to keep the machine looking simple. That’s part of the reason why at the end of each trail season the brakes come off. Average geometry (74.5 ht, 14-13.75 c.stay) has always felt best for me, it’s a good middle of the road set up that adapts to many different terrains.
WHAT’S WITH THE KEYSTONE ON THE REAR TRIANGLE? My identification with Pennsylvania after having lived in Pittsburgh for 7 years. It’s also recognition of the influence PA has had on the international trail scene. For at least fifteen years now the best trails have always been constructed in Pennsylvania clay and were still going strong.
DESCRIBE THE CONTENTS OF YOUR PERSONAL BIKE TOOL BAG: Socket wrench, adjustable, handful of allen-keys, zip ties, and a few other knick-knacks that I should just take out.
WHAT PART DO YOU WEAR THROUGH THE QUICKEST? Pedals and crank arms. I bend both usually in the first week of riding. It’s only the pedals that get replaced promptly though.
WHAT PART DO YOU BREAK MOST OFTEN? Myself.
DO YOU PATCH FLAT TYRES OR GET NEW TUBES? 50/50. If there is a fresh tube around that will usually be what I go for.
WHICH PARTS ARE YOU PARANOID ABOUT BREAKING? I try to set up my bike so that concern doesn’t arise. A good solid stem, fork, handlebar, and headtube are vital components in a reliable bike. If parts come my way that don’t meet my criteria of durability I let them pass.
WHERE DO YOUR PARTS GO WHEN YOU’RE DONE WITH THEM? Somewhere in my car or closet. Although, I just dropped off a bunch of old parts andframes at Free Ride. It’s this great place that recycles bikes and helps educate people on how to work on their wheeled machines. That is my new depository for old parts.
WHO BUILDS YOUR WHEELS? ANYTHING SPECIAL ABOUT THEM? I have built the last few sets myself. The straight-pull spokes used in the Tree hub makes for an easy build and a stiff wheel with less spoke tension.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU YELLED AT YOUR BIKE? It’s been a long time. Surprisingly I can’t remember.
